In the first of two votes, yesterday the DC Council unanimously approved Councilmember Charles Allen’s (Ward 6) Housing Conversion and Eviction Clarification Amendment Act of 2019, a bill that would disincentivize developers from downsizing multi-unit buildings to protect the total number of units and add a protection for tenants evicted by homeowners under the guise of using the rented space for themselves, but then turning around and renting the same space again within one year.

Bill would require two postpartum visits covered under insurance, would create Center for Maternal Wellness, and requires implicit bias training for medical professionals

Once we hold the Brickies, every December just seems to fly by. In part, that's because Ward 6 shifts into a stunning holiday mode that fills up the calendar and brings a little sense of wonder to our neighborhoods. From decorated houses to holiday markets to concerts to annual parties, it certainly is a great time of year. I'd like to run through a few things happening around Ward 6 and provide a quick update on what I've been working on at the Council.

As part of Native American Heritage Month, today Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6) along with Councilmember David Grosso (At-Large) introduced two bills seeking to strengthen Native American identity and honor longstanding agreements with recognized tribes.

What a week! It was only one week ago that the Washington Nationals won the World Series and joined the Caps and Mystics in bringing a trophy to DC. I hope you were able to join the celebration parade this weekend and catch up on sleep after so many late night Nats! Off the diamond, there's also been a lot happening at the Council and in the community, so let me catch you up.

Today the Sexual Assault Victims’ Rights Amendment Act of 2019 was passed unanimously by the DC Council, a landmark bill led by Councilmember Charles Allen through the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety.
