Yesterday, the Council gave final approval to the city’s budget for next year. Overall, I think this is a very good budget for the District. It includes an investment in many of the things that you and I both care deeply about – with record investment in affordable housing, homeless services, and more. In addition, there are significant investments in WMATA, public transit, public safety, local schools, neighborhood parks, and small business supports. But what gained a lot of attention during the final vote yesterday was how the Council decided to move forward with a tax relief package for residents and businesses. I heard strongly on all sides, and in the end, I offered a compromise amendment which the Council accepted. I wanted to share more about how I came to my decision on this important issue, and posted much more detail on my Facebook page if you’d like to read more.
As you may have seen, Mayor Bowser announced a final deal yesterday for DC United to build a new stadium in Southwest, with the goal of opening in spring of 2018. While the city will assemble and prepare the land, the team will pay for the construction of the new stadium. They have also entered into several agreements to hire DC residents not only for jobs during construction, but also after the stadium opens. I'm excited to see the DC United stadium deal come together. It has the potential to transform Buzzard Point with new jobs, housing, and amenities, as well as reconnect the Southwest neighborhood to the Anacostia River. The announced agreement also locks in more protections for DC residents, limits the financial risk for the District, and gives DC United great certainty about their future in our city.

At this morning’s DC Council legislative meeting, Councilmember Charles Allen introduced the Commemorative Flag Request and Statehood Fund Amendment Act of 2015.
Later today the DC Council will vote on the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Support Act, which will include Councilmember Charles Allen’s “Books From Birth” legislation.

At 17%, Ward 6 has the lowest canopy coverage in the city. But residents living and working in neighborhoods from the Southwest Waterfront to Kingman Park are eager to enjoy the same advantages that our city’s trees and green space provide other District neighborhoods.
