Statement from Councilmember Charles Allen: ‘DC’s E-Bike rebate program will be transformational, with demand far outpacing vouchers.’

DC’s Department of Transportation has announced application window and a list of participating local bike shops for an e-bike rebate program, set to begin April 1.

The following statement can be attributed to DC Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6), who chairs the Council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment and introduced legislation creating DC’s Electric Bicycle Incentive Program. The details of the program launch were released this morning by DDOT.

In just a few weeks, DC residents can begin applying for a voucher to cover the cost of buying and owning their own e-bikes. That’s going to be transformational, because it will provide an inexpensive, fast, and enjoyable way to get around the District. I predict we’re going to see far more demand than we can meet, and that’s a good thing. It shows our city’s leaders there’s a strong desire for people to have this as an option alongside Metro and bus, walking, rolling, and driving. And the fact that we’re doing it with equity front and center will also ensure more residents are able to take advantage of, and demand, improved infrastructure to get from point A to point B safely in neighborhoods that have historically experienced disinvestment.”

As a reminder, the law provides vouchers at two different amounts, depending on the recipient’s income. The law also requires participating retailers to have a physical location in the District in order to participate. More background here.
