Media Advisory: Tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct 4, Two Council Committees to Hold Hearing on Bills to Curb Dangerous Driving

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 4, the DC Council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment and Committee on Public Works and Operations will hold a joint public hearing on four bills relating to dangerous driving and enforcement efforts to make District streets safer. The hearing comes as the District has already surpassed the total number of traffic fatalities from last year, and it will build on a hearing on traffic enforcement Councilmember Allen held in May.

  • What: A public hearing featuring public witnesses only

    • The bills include Councilmember Allen’s “STEER (Strengthening Traffic Enforcement, Education, and Responsibility) Act”, Councilmember Nadeau’s “Fraudulent Vehicle Tag Enforcement Act”, and two bills by At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson, the “Automated Traffic Enforcement Effectiveness Act” and the “License Suspension Reform Act”.

    • A second hearing including government witnesses will be scheduled in the coming weeks. 

  • Who: The Committee on Transportation and the Environment is chaired by Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6), and the Committee on Public Works and Operations is chaired by Councilmember Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1).

    • Witness list includes more than 20 ANC representatives, families and survivors of traffic crashes, legal experts, and more.

  • Where: Room 412, John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and streamed online via the Council website and Councilmember Allen’s Facebook page.

  • When: Wednesday, October 4, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
