Monday: Councilmember Allen to Hold Hearing on Bills Reforming Campaign Finance and Elections

Councilmember Charles Allen, Chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, will lead a public hearing on four bills all focused on providing reforms and updates to laws governing how campaigns and elections are run.

What: Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety Public Hearing

Where: Room 500 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC

When: Monday, July 10 beginning at 9:30 am

The public will have four bills to offer testimony on:

  • Campaign Finance Transparency and Accountability Amendment Act of 2017 (Bill 22-0008)
  • Comprehensive Campaign Finance Reform Amendment Act of 2017 (Bill 22-0051)
  • Clean Elections Amendment Act of 2017 (Bill 22-0032)
  • Campaign Finance Reform Amendment Act of 2017 (Bill 22-0107)

“All four bills have different approaches to the same goal – ensuring voters can trust the electoral process and holding candidates and elected officials to a higher standard of accountability,” said Councilmember Allen. “I hope coming out of this hearing to have better direction for what concrete steps we can take to counteract real or perceived pay-to-play conflicts, ensure independent expenditures are really independent of candidates and campaigns, and close out campaign accounts sooner.”
