Statement from Councilmember Allen Following 5 More STEER Act Prosecutions by DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb

The statement below is from DC Councilmember Charles Allen (Ward 6), following the announcement of five new lawsuits brought by DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, using the STEER Act, against drivers with excessive speeding violations on DC roads. One driver in Maryland had accrued 300 speeding tickets in just two years. The STEER Act was authored by Councilmember Allen, and the provisions giving the Attorney General authority to go after dangerous drivers went into effect on Oct. 1, 2024.

“Spread the word: If you drive dangerously, DC Attorney General Schwalb and his team will take you to court, no matter where you live. Their team is enforcing the STEER Act aggressively with the clear goal of making our streets safer by forcing dangerous drivers to stop speeding, stop running red lights, and stop rolling through stop signs. These traffic scofflaws are driving through our neighborhoods without regard for human life, and they need to slow down before they kill someone. In the upcoming budget, I’ll be focused on identifying funding to implement additional provisions in the STEER Act, including a priority boot-and-tow point system, that will give DC more tools to go after dangerous drivers.”
