It gets pretty slow around the District in August - which means its a great time to enjoy some of the fun and free activities Ward 6 has to offer! Join Councilmember Charles Allen for a week's worth of fun events showcasing so much of what makes Ward 6 an incredible place to call home.
Starting Monday, August 6 through Sunday, August 11, you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors are invited to check out these great events and see all that Ward 6 has to offer. Unless otherwise marked, each event is free admission.
Monday, August 6
10:00 am - Northeast Library for Baby and Toddler Storytime
A perfect event for Ward 6's youngest residents - join Councilmember Allen for a story time for babies and toddlers - get tips on how to foster an early love of reading at our Northeast Branch Library.

6:15 pm - Tour NoMa's Murals by Bicycle!
DC has a long and colorful history with public art murals and the NoMa neighborhood has embraced the art form and taken public art to new heights. Let's hop on a bike (or a scooter) and take a short tour to see some of these beautiful murals up close - you'll even have a chance to meet a few of the local artists and learn about how these works of art get created. Tour begins at 10 K St., NE at 6:15 pm.

Tuesday, August 7
9-11 am - Ward 6 Day for National Building Museum's Summer Exhibit - Fun House!
Ward 6 residents gain free admission to check out the National Building Museum's super fun summer exhibit - a little more reading on Fun House. You will need to present ID that shows you are a resident of Ward 6 at the door to gain free entry.

4-6 pm - Celebrate National Night Out with a Ward 6 Block Party
National Night Out is a movement across our country where communities come together to celebrate, have some fun, eat good food, and show a unified commitment to public safety and understanding. Come meet your neighbors, your local MPD officers, and join in a wide range of fun events and resources you might not know about at a block party.

6:30-8 pm - Wine & Book Pairing at East City Bookshop
East City Bookshop is hosting an event pairing wine with local books (either by topic, author, or both!). Ward 6 is rich in local bookshops - if your looking for your next book to read or just want to get to know a local Ward 6 business, this is the event for you.

Wednesday, August 8
12 pm - DIY Ice Cream at NoMa's Fab Lab Pop-Up
While our city's flagship library, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, is under renovation, DCPL's cutting-edge Fab Lab is out in the community. Let's check out how to make ice cream at the NoMa pop-up. Children ages 6-12 must be accompanied by an adult. Since this is a hands on event, space is limited for this event.

6 pm - Shaw Walking Tour - 50 Years After the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Wednesday evening, join tour guide Alex Padro on a historical walking tour to revisit the riots that erupted in Shaw 50 years ago following the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following the tour, we'll unpack everything with a drink and a nibble at Shaw's Tavern. Tour is free, Shaw's Tavern orders are at-cost.

Thursday, August 9
12:05 pm - Ward 6 Day at Nationals Park!
Councilmember Allen will be heading to the Nationals game and bringing along more than 150 Ward 6 senior citizens as part of Ward 6 Day. Unfortunately, we don't have enough tickets to offer to the public, but if you end up at the game, be sure to stand up and cheer when they recognize Ward 6 before the game!
Friday, August 10
8:30 am - Friday Morning Coffee at Kingman Island
We are more than halfway through the Year of the Anacostia, so let's take a summer morning to enjoy coffee on a dock by the river. The Anacostia Riverkeeper will be offering boat tours as well. It's a Friday morning office hours unlike any other -- start your weekend by or on the water!

6:30 pm - Yards Park Friday Night Concert Series
Outdoor music. Green grass. The waterfront. That's summer in DC. Now in its 8th season, the Yards Park Concert Series is back and on Friday, August 10, Ward 6 Week is heading to the Capitol Riverfront to take in some live music and start the weekend right.

Saturday, August 11
10 am - 12 pm - Mt. Vernon Triangle Petting Zoo
Another great event for kids and adults alike - get the chance to pet baby lambs, bunnies, chickens, and other animals right in beautiful, downtown Mt. Vernon Triangle square at Milan Park (5th and K, NW). It will be located right next to the usual Saturday FRESHFarm Farmer's Market.

10:30 am - Saturday morning Story Time at Solid State Books
Solid State Books, located on H Street, invites the community to join them for a children's story time as part of Ward 6 Week. Councilmember Charles Allen will try to stop by, schedule permitting, but everyone should feel welcome to bring their children for a free story time reading! Solid State Books is located at 600F H St., NE.
1-5 pm - Lansburgh Park Community Day
Finish out Ward 6 Week in Southwest with a community day at Lansburgh Park. Resources for families including haircuts, school supplies, and more. A voter registration drive alongside free food and music? A dream come true! Let's get together in Southwest!
