I’ve heard from hundreds of you in the past couple of weeks about the new administration and Congress’ renewed interest in meddling in our local affairs. While voicing our displeasure through social media serves a valuable purpose, we must organize for action. That’s why I’m planning a community meeting on Monday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Atlas Performing Arts Center to talk through the threats to DC laws and values, and work together outline (and take) actions that protect the progress that we’ve made here in the District. If protesting is the new brunch, then organizing is the happy hour. Join me and a diverse array of advocacy organizations who need your help to fight back right here in DC.

Today Councilmember Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) introduced three new members of his staff.

On Friday morning, we learned that Major General Errol R. Schwartz will be removed as head of the D.C. National Guard in the middle of Inauguration Day at 12:01 p.m. Major General Schwartz is responsible for the operational readiness of the D.C. National Guard and has spent months planning for Inauguration Day.

The Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety will hold a roundtable hearing on Thursday, January 12, at 9:30 a.m. to discuss public safety preparedness for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration and the Women’s March on Washington.

Yesterday Councilmember Charles Allen (D-Ward 6), Chair of the Council’s Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, introduced a number of new bills at the January legislative meeting of the DC Council focused on good government and public schools.

On Thursday, January 12, 2017, Councilmember Charles Allen, Chairperson of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, will convene a public oversight roundtable to consider “Preparations for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration”. The roundtable will take place in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., at 9:30 a.m.

As we near the end of 2016, I hope you've had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family! It feels like 2016 flew by faster than I'd like with a growing family, great work at the Council, and so many exciting projects underway in our community. As I gear up to start a new year with more responsibility at the Council -- and a new opportunity to help shape our shared priorities for our neighborhoods -- I'm eager for the chance to work with you to build on what we've accomplished these last two years. Councilmember Charles Allen today applauded the DC Chief Financial Officer for announcing the selection of a new plan administrator for the DC 529 College Savings Program.

Today Councilmember Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) was named the new Chair of the Council’s Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary beginning in 2017 with the start of the new Council Period on January 2.
